Women like Ruby Mae Watkins and London Breed and Opal McCoy come to mind when I think of the line that so many Black women have had to tow over centuries to keep the family solid. Ruddering against a raging landscape of antagonism and social vitriol levied against people of brown skin, I know the horrors. I've heard the screams and the yearnings for justice. I've kept record of all the undocumented stories that proved just how much to the ops that black lives had no value but still, like fresh wind we rise. Black Sugar is my unapologetic salute to you, you and to you. I thank you and I love you for all that you do.
lyrics
What it's all about
Black love, black love, black love matters
It's all about black love, black love, black love matters
What it's all about
Black love, black love, black love
It matters
It's all about black love, black love matters
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me
Tell it to the rage
Burning down, growing deeper inside me
Speak into my faith
A spiritual warrior, survivor, believer
I'm a believer
Got me here by grace
I mean on the wing of a dreamer
I made it, yeah I made it
Get up out the way, ay
If you can't take the pressure it breeds
No cap cause I'ma keep giving you all this
Black love, black sugar
Whoa, you can see it in the way I walk
Feel the spirit in the way I talk
I'm giving you black love, black sugar
Whoa, uh, yeah
Watch me pass that back
For the love you give that's never recognized
Hardest working up and down the line, I know
Underpaid and still work overtime
In your genius, you was born to shine
When you can't give up, can't get over
And can't get out of the game
When you can't give up, can't get over
And can't get out of the game
Somebody help me say
When you can't give up, can't get over
I mean, you can't get out of the game
Hey, can't get over
Well, they ain't never gonna stop
So I gotta keep giving us black love, black sugar
Whoa, you can see it in the way I walk
Feel the spirit in the way I talk
I'm giving you black love, black sugar
Oh, whoa
You should know, you should know
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me
As long as you know life matters
Your life matters
Black life matters to me, yeah
Now pass that back
For the love you give that's never recognized
Hardest working up and down the line, I know
Underpaid and still work overtime
It's in your genius you was born to shine
